For decades, the world's best vaccine scientists have been playing catch-up; designing shots against today's virus while tomorrow's mutant strain quietly takes shape. A team at the University of Cambridge believes it has found a way to finally get ahead of the curve. Their weapon: artificial intelligence.
Researchers have used AI to develop what they describe as a "fundamentally new" type of vaccine, one engineered not against a single strain of virus, but against entire families of them. It is, they say, the first time a vaccine's core component has been designed entirely by AI and then tested in human trials.
The vaccine targets all coronaviruses, every known Covid variant, and crucially, the coronaviruses currently circulating in animals that could trigger the next pandemic. The AI analysed genetic codes gathered by global viral surveillance programmes and then designed a "super-antigen" capable of training the immune system to recognise and fight the whole coronavirus family, even strains that do not yet exist.
"This is about making vaccines that protect us not just from today's viruses, but from what can cause the next outbreak," said Professor Jonathan Heeney, who led the research. "This is a fundamental shift in how we prepare for pandemics."
Early human trials, involving 39 participants, were designed primarily to assess safety. The immune response was described as "modest" but the proof of concept has generated significant excitement across the scientific community. A second, larger trial of around 200 people is now underway.
The Cambridge team is already applying the same AI approach to universal seasonal flu vaccines, removing the need for annual reformulation, as well as an H5N1 bird flu vaccine and a broad vaccine covering viral haemorrhagic fevers including Ebola species, one of which is currently causing an active outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo with no approved vaccine.
Professor Andy Pollard of the Oxford Vaccine Group, who was not involved in the research, called the data "fascinating," adding that AI tools have the potential to predict immune responses and make vaccine development dramatically faster. "It will save lives," he said.
The pandemic age taught the world the cost of being unprepared. This technology is the first serious attempt to make that excuse obsolete.
