The United States military has turned to advanced artificial intelligence in its ongoing campaign against Iran, highlighting the growing role of technology in modern warfare. At the center of this development is Claude, an AI model created by the company Anthropic. Despite tensions between the U.S. government and the AI startup, the Pentagon reportedly used Claude during its recent military operations against Iran.
In a surprising twist, the U.S. military deployed the AI tool within hours of banning it. The Pentagon had threatened to blacklist Anthropic, yet the system was still used during the attack, demonstrating how dependent modern defense operations have become on advanced AI technologies. This unusual situation reflects a broader challenge for the U.S. government: balancing strategic needs with disagreements over how AI should be used in warfare.
According to reports, the military relied heavily on the Maven Smart System, a powerful intelligence platform developed by the data analytics company Palantir Technologies. The system processes vast amounts of classified information gathered from satellites, surveillance systems, and other intelligence sources. By analyzing this data in real time, Maven can identify potential targets and prioritize them for military strikes.
During the first 24 hours of the operation, the system reportedly helped the U.S. military identify and strike around 1,000 targets. The speed and scale of these operations would have been nearly impossible using traditional methods alone. AI-driven analysis enabled commanders to make faster decisions and coordinate complex operations more efficiently.

Meanwhile, Anthropic’s stance on restricting the use of its AI in warfare has drawn attention across the technology industry. Employees at companies such as Google and OpenAI have begun advocating for clearer rules and safeguards governing how artificial intelligence is used by the military.
As AI continues to transform global defense strategies, the debate over its ethical limits and strategic value is likely to intensify. The Pentagon’s reliance on systems like Claude and Maven suggests that artificial intelligence may soon become an indispensable tool on the modern battlefield.
