Apple is preparing a major expansion into AI-powered wearables, with smart glasses expected to headline the push. The company is reportedly targeting a 2027 launch for the glasses, with production potentially beginning in late 2026. Designed to compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, Apple’s version will reportedly prioritise premium build quality and tighter integration with Siri, positioning them as an all-day AI companion rather than simply a camera accessory.

Unlike augmented reality headsets, Apple’s first-generation glasses are not expected to include a display in the lenses. Instead, the device will rely on voice commands and contextual AI. Equipped with a high-resolution camera for capturing photos and video, alongside a secondary sensor designed to interpret surroundings and measure distance, the glasses will allow users to ask Siri questions about what they are seeing, receive navigation guidance, translate text, and set reminders based on visual input. Apple is said to be embedding all components including the battery directly into the frame, with multiple sizes and colors planned.

Beyond glasses, Apple is also exploring a smaller AI-focused wearable, informally described as an “AI pin.” Still in early development and potentially subject to cancellation, the device would function as an iPhone accessory rather than a standalone product. It would include a low-resolution always-on camera and microphone to provide environmental awareness to Siri, with most processing handled by the connected iPhone. The concept echoes broader industry experiments with screenless AI devices, though Apple appears cautious about committing fully at this stage.

AirPods may also gain visual intelligence capabilities sooner. Reports suggest Apple is developing a version of its wireless earbuds equipped with low-resolution cameras designed to gather contextual information rather than capture photos. Development on this product is reportedly further along than the AI pin, potentially making it one of the first AI-enhanced wearables to reach market as Apple deepens integration between hardware and artificial intelligence.

Underlying all these devices is Apple’s broader AI strategy. A more advanced, chatbot-style version of Siri is said to be in development for a future iOS release, potentially leveraging external AI models. Further down the line, Apple is also believed to be working on augmented reality glasses with built-in displays, alongside new home-focused devices such as an upgraded HomePod and a smart display hub. Together, the roadmap suggests Apple sees AI wearables not as a single product category, but as a connected ecosystem shaping its next decade of hardware innovation.
