BYD Launches World's Largest Car Carrier, the 'BYD Shenzhen'

China's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, has unveiled the 'BYD Shenzhen,' officially the world's largest car carrier vessel. Delivered on April 22 at a naming ceremony in Yizheng, Jiangsu Province, the enormous roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ship has 16 decks and is 219.9 meters long.

The BYD Shenzhen breaks the previous record set by the ships of Norway's Höegh Autoliners with a capacity of 9,200 automobiles at once. This ship, which is BYD's fourth and most sophisticated car transporter, is part of an expanding fleet intended to serve as a "maritime bridge" between Chinese EV manufacturing and international markets. In addition to the newly launched 'BYD Changsha,' which can accommodate 9,200 cars, the fleet already consists of three ships with a capacity of 7,000.

The BYD Shenzhen, which was constructed by China Merchants Industry, has multiple green technology and an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system. These include of advanced pollution reduction systems that meet IMO Tier III requirements, a hybrid battery system, and high-voltage shore power that permits zero emissions while in port. The ship is equipped with high-efficiency loading technologies and is designed to transport new energy vehicles (NEVs) in a steady, low-carbon manner.

The BYD Shenzhen will travel to Brazil after its introduction, which is a major growth area for the carmaker. The goal of this BYD maritime logistics development is to increase productivity, lower shipping costs, and expedite delivery times in order to support the company's rapidly expanding global sales, which saw over 417,000 units shipped abroad in 2024. This investment takes place as the realities of international commerce change, with certain markets imposing higher levies on Chinese EVs.
