China’s BYD has officially overtaken Tesla as the world’s biggest seller of electric vehicles, marking a symbolic shift in the global EV race. In 2025, BYD sold more than 2.25 million battery-powered cars, a jump of nearly 28% from the previous year. Tesla, by contrast, reported global deliveries of about 1.64 million vehicles, down almost 9%, placing it behind its Chinese rival for the first time on an annual basis.
Tesla’s decline reflects a challenging year for the US automaker. Sales fell sharply in the final quarter of 2025, partly due to the removal of government subsidies that had previously lowered EV prices for consumers. The company has also faced mixed reactions to new models, intensifying competition from lower-priced Chinese brands, and investor unease over Elon Musk’s growing political and business commitments outside Tesla.
Chinese manufacturers have reshaped the competitive landscape by aggressively pricing their vehicles below Western rivals. BYD, along with brands such as Geely and MG, has capitalized on cost advantages and scale, putting pressure on established players in Europe and other markets. Tesla responded last year by introducing cheaper versions of its most popular models in the US, but analysts have still trimmed their sales expectations for the company in 2026.
Despite being overtaken in volume, Tesla retains important strengths. The company has remained more profitable than BYD in recent quarters and continues to command strong investor interest due to its ambitions in self-driving technology, robotaxis, and humanoid robots. Musk’s compensation package, which hinges on ambitious growth targets and future technologies, underscores how critical the next few years will be for Tesla’s long-term strategy.
For BYD, the milestone cements its status as a global EV powerhouse. Although its growth rate slowed in 2025 amid fierce competition at home, the company has expanded rapidly overseas, especially in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. With competitive pricing and an expanding product range, BYD’s rise signals a broader shift in the EV industry, one where Chinese manufacturers are no longer just challengers but leaders shaping the future of electric mobility.
