The world’s first large-scale commercial e-methanol plant has officially opened in Kassø, Denmark, marking a major milestone in the global transition to low-emission fuels. This pioneering €150 million facility represents a joint venture between European Energy (51%) and Mitsui & Co. (49%), and is now fully operational.
The Kassø plant delivers 42,000 metric tons—or 53 million litres—of e-methanol annually. The fuel is produced using green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ captured from biogas and waste incineration, all powered by the adjacent 304 MW Kassø Solar Park. This makes it a fully renewable and carbon-reducing solution for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize.
Among the first buyers of this green fuel are major global players such as A.P. Moller – Maersk, LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk. Maersk, in particular, is using Kassø’s e-methanol to power its dual-fuel fleet, including the Laura Maersk, the world’s first methanol-powered container ship.

Beyond shipping, the plant’s impact extends into manufacturing and energy. E-methanol from Kassø is being used to produce more sustainable plastics and chemicals. Additionally, the facility’s integrated design channels excess heat from production to warm 3,300 local households, reinforcing its role in community-based sustainability.
The launch of Kassø sets a new precedent for Power-to-X (PtX) technologies, demonstrating the feasibility of scaling green fuel production to meet global demand. It offers a blueprint for future projects and a clear signal that e-methanol—and by extension, green fuels—have evolved from pilot projects into real-world, commercial-scale solutions.
