Data Centers in Space : Next Frontier

As artificial intelligence drives an unprecedented surge in computing demand, one startup believes the answer may lie beyond Earth’s atmosphere. US-based space technology company Starcloud is developing orbital data centres that could one day power AI systems from space rather than the ground.

The idea comes as AI infrastructure places mounting pressure on electricity grids, water supplies and available land. Modern AI data centres consume enormous amounts of power and require extensive cooling, with global electricity demand from data centres expected to more than double over the next few years as AI adoption accelerates.

Starcloud's concept involves launching modular data centres into orbit, where they would be powered continuously by solar energy and cooled naturally by the vacuum of space. The company argues this approach could significantly reduce dependence on terrestrial power grids while lowering the environmental footprint associated with traditional AI infrastructure.

Although the technology remains in its early stages, Starcloud plans to begin testing prototype systems in orbit before scaling to larger commercial facilities later this decade. Major engineering challenges, including launch costs, hardware maintenance and reliable communications with Earth, must still be overcome before orbital computing becomes commercially viable.
