Passion drives everything I do. Without genuine passion, it’s nearly impossible to summon the strength needed for innovation or to persevere when the going gets tough. Along with passion comes commitment—giving your full effort in every situation, regardless of the outcome. I recognize that success often depends on circumstances outside one’s control, but if I’ve given 100%, I feel a sense of accomplishment without regret.
Empowerment is also crucial, particularly with younger generations like Gen Z. Effective empowerment is not about letting go entirely, but allowing creativity and ability to flourish, while always remaining reachable. It’s vital my team knows, "I’ve got your back." Empowerment is a delicate balance between trust, guidance, and support.
What is the best advice you ever received in your professional journey, and how has it impacted your approach to leadership?
The best advice I ever received is to choose your battles. In both professional and personal life, you will inevitably face setbacks, disappointments, and even betrayals. It’s essential to keep the big picture in mind and not be consumed by temporary setbacks. This advice gave me the strength to not be discouraged, and taught me that sometimes, losing a small battle is necessary in order to win the larger war.
This wisdom has cultivated my resilience and ability to focus on what truly matters. When faced with setbacks, I take time to process them calmly and resist making emotionally charged decisions. I am careful to listen to constructive and genuine feedback, while tuning out the purely critical voices. This not only keeps me motivated but also ensures I consistently align my energy with my long-term vision and values.
How do you see the future of digital payments evolving in Sri Lanka, and what role do you hope to play in that transformation?
Sri Lanka’s digital payments ecosystem is evolving at remarkable speed, accelerated by a surge in social media use, internet penetration, and mobile connectivity since 2019. Emerging after a period of national crises, these changes are laying a robust foundation for further digitization.
The future will revolve around three pillars: speed, security, and seamless integration. Consumer demands are shifting rapidly—people want instant, secure, and hassle-free payment experiences. The digital transformation of SMEs is especially crucial, given that they make up a vast proportion of Sri Lanka’s GDP and employ much of its workforce. Their move to digital platforms will be a linchpin of national progress.
At Mastercard, I see my role as a catalyst for both innovation and inclusion. My mission involves bridging global expertise with local context to deliver secure, scalable digital payment solutions. This isn’t just about technology—it’s about creating an ecosystem where digital transactions are accessible, inclusive, and trusted. Leveraging AI and advanced technologies, we aim to drive cost efficiency, transparency, and broader financial empowerment, making the digital leap sustainable and equitable for all Sri Lankans, especially SMEs and previously underserved markets.
How do you approach building and motivating high-performing teams in a multicultural, multinational environment?
Diversity isn’t a slogan for me—it’s a lived philosophy. A multicultural team brings together a tapestry of backgrounds, perspectives, and skillsets, which leads to richer solutions and greater innovation. I work deliberately to harness this diversity by:

I’ve learned that perfect balance is a myth—accepting its imperfection is crucial for peace of mind. Instead, I embrace prioritization, which shifts in cycles throughout life. At one stage, professional education might take precedence, while at others, it could be family or a new work challenge.
Having a support system is essential—no achievement is possible alone. My colleagues, friends, and family play critical roles. I find the concept of work-life integration reflects my reality better than balance; it’s about fitting work and personal life together efficiently. For example, I use remote work to sometimes pick up my son from nursery or enjoy small treats together, integrating family time without compromising work output. Ultimately, it’s about delivering results, not adhering to a rigid schedule.
Can you share a project or initiative at Mastercard that supports gender equality?
One global initiative I’m proud of is Mastercard’s Girls4Tech program. Focused on bridging the gender gap in STEM fields, Girls4Tech inspires young girls to build skills in algorithms, encryption, fraud detection, and data analysis. Senior leadership, including myself, serve as mentors, and the curriculum is hands-on and engaging.
The program’s reach is substantial, operating in over 60 countries and numerous languages. In Sri Lanka, it’s especially valuable in increasing digital and computer literacy among girls in a context where cultural stereotypes still dissuade women from choosing careers in ICT and STEM. By inspiring girls at a young age and giving them direct pathways into technology, Mastercard is empowering the next generation of female leaders in digital fields.

How do you stay resilient and motivated when faced with setbacks or failures, both professionally and personally?
Resilience begins with accepting setbacks for what they are, rather than dwelling on blame or regret. I take time to digest failures before making decisions, as acting in the heat of the moment rarely helps.
I also seek constructive criticism from genuine mentors and colleagues, filtering out feedback that isn’t constructive or supportive. Listening is key, even when it’s difficult to face one’s own mistakes, and acknowledging areas for improvement enables growth. I actively reflect on what could be done differently and look for new directions instead of being paralyzed by setbacks. Ultimately, I remind myself that many success stories are built on failures, and maintaining connection with my bigger purpose always helps me stay motivated and optimistic.
Outside of your professional responsibilities, what hobbies or passions help you recharge and inspire creativity?
Travel is my passion—I love experiencing new cities, cultures, foods, and environments, both within and outside Sri Lanka. Exploring architecture and nature always refreshes my perspective.
I make time for regular exercise and recently started learning to swim, which is both rejuvenating and a long-term goal. Singing is next on my hobby list! I’m also inspired by movies based on real-life stories because they bring perspective and inspiration. Above all, quality time with family and friends is invaluable—those moments help me unwind and find new creativity to bring back to my work.
