As the world emerges from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asia’s tourism industry is undergoing a transformation. In response to changing consumer attitudes in the post-pandemic era, Lisa1, an Associate Professor at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, CFHK Business School, emphasizes the growing significance of ecotourism.

Before the pandemic, destinations like Hong Kong were largely associated with shopping and culinary tourism. Travelers of today, however, are giving more weight to experiences that enhance mental health and create closer ties with the environment and local cultures. The ecotourism industry has faced both possibilities and challenges as a result of this change.

The tourism industry remains cautious in its embrace of ecotourism due to concerns over slower revenue generation. However, consumers are increasingly realizing that meaningful travel experiences, sustainability, and mental wellness are becoming their major priorities. Travelers of all income levels find ecotourism appealing, with wealthy tourists frequently looking for opulent, customized nature-based experiences. Successful examples from China and Japan show how sustainability and first-rate service and cultural heritage may coexist.

Today, sustainable tourism encompasses cultural and economic aspects in addition to environmental protection. Incorporating sustainability into tourism is essential for long-term success rather than concentrating only on immediate financial gain, which could worsen global problems like climate change.

Luxury hospitality faces its own dilemma: how to provide comfort while reducing environmental impact. Hotels are becoming more open and creative in their sustainability initiatives as a result of technological advancements and increased awareness of greenwashing. The future of ecotourism in Asia will be shaped by both individual and group responsibility. Ecotourism has the potential to flourish while fostering the welfare of both tourists and the environment through industry-wide collaboration, sustainable practices, and education.
