The widening conflict in the Middle East is creating ripple effects far beyond the region, with European leaders warning that Russia is emerging as the main beneficiary of the crisis. Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, said the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran is indirectly strengthening Moscow’s position while diverting global attention from the war in Ukraine.

Now in its eleventh day, the conflict has escalated rapidly across the Middle East as Iranian forces launch retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli targets and infrastructure across the Gulf. The fighting has also disrupted energy supplies moving through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. As traffic through the waterway slows dramatically, global oil and gas flows have been squeezed, pushing fuel prices sharply higher and raising concerns about economic impacts across multiple industries.

According to Costa, the surge in energy prices is providing Russia with additional revenue at a time when it continues its long-running military campaign against Ukraine. Higher oil and gas prices are expected to strengthen Moscow’s finances, potentially giving the Kremlin more resources to sustain its war effort. At the same time, the conflict in the Middle East is drawing global political and military attention away from the Ukrainian front.

European officials are also concerned that military resources that could otherwise support Ukraine may now be redirected toward the escalating situation in the Gulf. As the crisis expands, the geopolitical spotlight has increasingly shifted from Eastern Europe to the Middle East, further complicating efforts to maintain international focus on Ukraine.

Costa has urged restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from spiraling further. European leaders warn that continued escalation could destabilize not only the Middle East but also Europe and the wider global economy, particularly if disruptions to energy supplies persist.
