In a dramatic political debut, C. Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Election, winning around 108 seats. Although short of the 118-seat majority in the 234-member assembly, the party is now in a strong position to form the government, with talks underway with potential allies including Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and left parties.

Vijay’s entry into politics has quickly translated into electoral success, driven by a manifesto that targets a wide cross section of society. From farmers to homemakers and vulnerable groups, the TVK campaign focused heavily on welfare driven policies. With Vijay now likely to become Chief Minister, attention is turning to whether these ambitious promises can be delivered.

A major highlight of the manifesto is its focus on direct financial support. The party has promised ₹2,500 per month for women homemakers, six free LPG cylinders annually, and welfare benefits such as gold and clothing support for marriages and newborns. Free bus travel for women and ₹3,000 monthly assistance for the elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities further underline the party’s social welfare agenda.

Education and healthcare also feature prominently. TVK has pledged to establish 100 residential schools, provide education loans up to ₹20 lakh without collateral, and offer AI powered coaching for competitive exams. In healthcare, promises include ₹25 lakh insurance coverage per family, free annual health checkups, and modernization of government hospitals, alongside a broader push for a drug free Tamil Nadu.

The party has also made strong commitments on employment and infrastructure. These include ₹4,000 monthly support for unemployed graduates,  business loans up to ₹25 lakh, paid internship programs, and 500,000 government job vacancies. Farmers are set to benefit from ₹15,000 annual assistance, crop loan waivers, full insurance coverage, and large scale solar pump installations.

As coalition talks continue, the focus now shifts from campaign rhetoric to governance. While TVK’s sweeping promises have resonated with voters, the real challenge lies ahead, turning an ambitious vision into practical policy in one of India’s most politically dynamic states.
