Google has announced a groundbreaking agreement to support Broadwing Energy’s new gas power plant in Decatur, Illinois, the first corporate-backed facility to integrate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The project marks a major milestone in Google’s mission to drive a reliable, affordable, and clean energy future while supporting the company’s growing data infrastructure.

Under the agreement, Google will purchase most of the power generated by the 400-megawatt plant, which will capture and permanently store about 90% of its CO₂ emissions deep underground. The captured carbon will be stored more than a mile below the surface in EPA-approved sequestration facilities operated by Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), a company with nearly a decade of experience in safe CO₂ storage.

Developed in partnership with Low Carbon Infrastructure (LCI), a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, Broadwing is the first in a series of planned CCS projects that aim to demonstrate large-scale deployment of clean firm power in the United States. The initiative is expected to create approximately 750 full-time jobs during construction and dozens of permanent positions once operational by 2030.

CCS technology, endorsed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), plays a vital role in reducing emissions from power generation and heavy industries such as steel and cement. By investing in projects like Broadwing, Google hopes to accelerate the commercialization of CCS, making it more accessible and cost-effective worldwide.

In parallel, Google continues to leverage artificial intelligence to reduce emissions globally. In 2024 alone, its AI-powered tools helped users cut an estimated 26 million metric tons of CO₂, the equivalent of the annual energy use of over 3.5 million U.S. homes, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
