The United States could see a historic breakthrough in its state leadership as eight Black candidates compete in gubernatorial races across the country. With five Democrats and three Republicans in the running, the 2026 election cycle has produced a record number of Black gubernatorial nominees, potentially reshaping a political milestone achieved only three times in American history.

Since Virginia’s Douglas Wilder became the first elected Black governor in 1989, only two others have followed: Massachusetts’ Deval Patrick in 2006 and Maryland’s Wes Moore in 2022. This year’s candidates include Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Byron Donalds in Florida and David Crowley in Wisconsin. Bottoms could make history as the first Black woman elected governor, while a Republican victory would mark another major milestone for the party.

In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Bottoms is seeking to turn Democratic hopes into victory after the party’s previous gubernatorial defeats under Stacey Abrams. She has focused her campaign on rising living costs and concerns over the direction of the country under President Donald Trump. However, Bottoms faces a substantial financial disadvantage against Republican businessman Rick Jackson, whose campaign and supporters have spent far more on advertising. Late donations from prominent Democratic backers are helping fund a final push to mobilise voters.

Florida Republican Byron Donalds is also pursuing a historic victory, with the state’s recent political trends favouring his party. Backed by Trump, Donalds hopes to broaden Republican support among Black voters. Yet his positions on education, immigration, criminal justice and voting rights have attracted criticism, including during a tense appearance at Florida A&M University. Some students said his policies mattered more to them than the historical significance of electing a Black governor.

The races highlight both the progress and continuing divisions in American politics. While the candidates’ backgrounds could help break long-standing barriers, their success will ultimately depend on voter turnout, campaign resources and support for their policy platforms. With the election approaching, the results could deliver a historic shift in representation while revealing how race, party loyalty and political priorities are shaping the country’s future.
