Lee Jae-myung has been elected as the 14th President of South Korea, following a snap election triggered by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Lee secured 49.42% of the vote, defeating conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, who garnered 41.15%. Voter turnout reached 79.38%, the highest since 1997.

The election was necessitated by Yoon's controversial declaration of martial law in December 2024, which was widely condemned and led to his removal from office.

In his inaugural address, President Lee pledged to "heal wounds" and pursue dialogue with North Korea while maintaining strong alliances with the U.S. and Japan.  He emphasized the need to address economic challenges, including declining exports and rising household debt, and to reform South Korea's over-centralized development model.

Lee's presidency marks a significant shift in South Korean politics, as he brings a background as a human rights lawyer and a commitment to liberal reforms.  However, he faces challenges, including legal issues and a deeply divided political landscape.

The international community, including the United States, has acknowledged Lee's election and expressed a commitment to continued cooperation.

As President Lee begins his term, he aims to navigate South Korea through a period of recovery and reform, seeking to restore stability and unity in the nation.
