Reliance Jio is poised to become the world’s largest Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) provider by subscriber base, surpassing US-based telecom giant T-Mobile. As of May 2025, Jio’s total 5G FWA subscriber base, including unlicensed band radio (UBR), reached 6.88 million, exceeding T-Mobile’s 6.85 million subscribers in March.

According to a report by ICICI Securities, Jio reclassified nearly 1 million UBR subscribers into the FTTx category. After this reclassification, its net FWA subscriber base stood at 5.9 million in May, with a strong monthly addition of 0.74 million users. Industry-wide, excluding UBR, total FWA subscribers were at 7.4 million, with Jio contributing the lion’s share.

Reliance Jio’s dominance extends across the Indian broadband sector, holding a 50.72% market share, combining both wired and wireless segments. Its fixed wired broadband user base stood at 13.51 million, while its wireless broadband subscribers totaled a massive 480.96 million in May, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

Bharti Airtel follows with a 30.99% share in the broadband segment. Together, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continue to lead the Indian telecom market. In May alone, the two operators were responsible for 99.84% of the total net subscriber additions in the country, contributing 4.35 million out of the total 4.36 million new users.

With its rapid subscriber growth and aggressive expansion, Jio is expected to firmly establish itself as the global leader in FWA by the end of June 2025. Its continued dominance signals a pivotal shift in the global broadband landscape, driven by India's growing digital infrastructure and Jio’s strategic market maneuvers.
