A laboratory worker at a plague research institute in Siberia has died after falling ill under circumstances that remain unclear, prompting authorities to quarantine people who came into contact with her and launch an emergency health response. The death at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute has sparked concern on social media, although Russian officials say there is no evidence so far linking it to exposure to plague.

Around 200 people who reportedly had contact with the woman have been placed under quarantine or medical supervision. Parts of the hospital where she died were also cordoned off, while some local workplaces introduced precautionary measures such as mask requirements. Russia’s health watchdog said investigators had found no evidence of an accident involving dangerous pathogens at the research institute.

Officials have identified the cause of death only as pneumonia of unknown origin. Among those who had contact with the woman, authorities detected two COVID-19 cases and two rhinovirus infections, but no other infectious diseases were reported. Regional Governor Igor Kobzev said all known contacts had been identified and examined, while no new cases among employees of the anti-plague institute had been reported in recent days.

The incident has drawn international attention because plague-causing bacteria, known as Yersinia pestis, are naturally present among wild rodents and their fleas in parts of Siberia. Plague remains rare among Russians, but the disease can become life-threatening quickly if untreated. Pneumonic plague is particularly serious because it can spread through infectious respiratory droplets, although the disease can be treated effectively with antibiotics when detected early.

The World Health Organization said the available information suggested that the risk to the general population was low, while noting that its assessment could change as more information becomes available. Russian authorities have urged the public to remain calm and maintain that the situation is under control. Meanwhile, US officials said they were monitoring developments, with President Donald Trump offering US assistance if Russia requires support.
