Spider-Man has done it again. The latest installment in Sony's long-running franchise, Brand New Day, has swung to the second-highest opening weekend in Hollywood history, and it wasn't particularly close.
The film took in $355 million in US and Canadian theatres over its opening weekend, more than double this year's previous biggest debut, April's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Internationally, it added another $572 million, setting all-time opening records in France, India, and Brazil, according to Sony. The global total puts Brand New Day just $2 million behind Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, the 2019 behemoth that went on to gross $2.8 billion worldwide and still holds the all-time record.
The numbers alone would make headlines. But what has the industry talking is the reception. Brand New Day scored 90% with critics and 98% with regular audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, a combination of commercial and critical approval that is exceptionally rare at this scale.
The film marks a deliberate tonal shift from Marvel's recent multiverse-heavy storylines, instead telling a grounded story about a man torn between his duty to protect his city and his need for personal connection. That choice appears to have paid off. Audiences, it seems, were ready for a Spider-Man story that felt human again.
