A massive winter storm sweeping across the United States has caused widespread disruption to air travel, forcing the cancellation of more than 13,000 flights over a three-day period from Saturday through Monday. The storm, which stretches from Texas to New England, is being described by forecasters as one of the most expansive winter weather events since the historic 1993 “superstorm.”

According to flight-tracking service FlightAware, the scale of the disruption rivals some of the worst air travel interruptions seen in recent years. Aviation analytics firm Cirium noted that for certain airlines, Sunday’s cancellations were approaching levels last experienced during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Major airports across the country have been heavily affected, with Memphis, Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth recording cancellation rates of 75% or more. Austin, Charlotte, Nashville, Washington and New York have also seen significant delays as the storm progresses eastward.

Airlines and airports have activated contingency plans in anticipation of severe conditions, including heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain and dangerously low temperatures. Several carriers, including American Airlines, added extra flights and seats ahead of the storm’s peak and waived change fees and fare differences to help stranded passengers adjust their travel plans.

Weather officials warned that the storm poses serious risks beyond aviation. The US Weather Prediction Center said up to 180 million Americans could be affected, with catastrophic ice accumulation expected in parts of the South and Northern Virginia. Extremely cold air trailing the system is likely to prolong travel hazards and delay recovery efforts.

Airport authorities, including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, confirmed that winter storm protocols are in place, while the Federal Aviation Administration said it is closely monitoring conditions to ensure the safety of the national airspace system. Travelers have been urged to check real-time airport updates before heading to the airport.
