To Mythos or Not to Mythos? Even Trump & Xi Isn't Sure

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the digital world, and a new system known as Mythos highlights just how powerful these technologies are becoming. Anyone familiar with AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude understands how they can answer questions or write text. But today’s most advanced models are moving far beyond conversation. They are now capable of writing complex software and identifying weaknesses in computer systems, capabilities that could reshape both cybersecurity and cybercrime.
Developed by AI company Anthropic, Mythos is being described as an extraordinarily capable cybersecurity engineer. Earlier AI models could detect vulnerabilities in software but struggled to turn those discoveries into actual attacks. Mythos, however, represents a major leap forward. In testing, it successfully exploited a known vulnerability hundreds of times and was even able to build a full attack chain that affected deep system components such as the Windows registry. Experts say this marks a significant shift, raising concerns that individuals with little technical knowledge could potentially carry out sophisticated cyberattacks using powerful AI tools.
This rapid advancement is particularly significant given the long-standing shortage of cybersecurity professionals. For decades, skilled hackers and security engineers have been difficult and expensive to train. AI systems like Mythos could automate many of these tasks, finding bugs, analyzing them, and exploiting them autonomously. In effect, such tools could give organizations unprecedented capabilities to test their own systems, but they could also provide similar power to malicious actors if misused.
Despite the risks, Anthropic has taken a cautious approach to releasing the technology. The company has limited access to Mythos, sharing it only with a small group of trusted partners, including major technology firms and infrastructure providers. The goal is to allow these organizations to use the system to identify and fix vulnerabilities before similar capabilities become widely available. By stress-testing software systems now, developers hope to strengthen defenses before the technology spreads further.
The emergence of Mythos has already triggered concern among policymakers and business leaders. Government officials and financial institutions have reportedly begun discussing the potential risks of AI-powered cyberattacks, with some calling the development a major wake-up call. While many experts believe the technology could ultimately improve security by exposing hidden vulnerabilities, they also warn that the coming months could be critical in determining whether AI strengthens digital defenses, or creates entirely new threats.
