Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day state visit to the United States is bringing artificial intelligence, global trade and critical minerals into focus as Washington and Beijing seek to manage their economic and technological rivalry.
The visit, culminating in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 24, marks Xi's first official state visit to the United States in more than a decade. The two leaders are scheduled to meet at the White House, where discussions will address several major issues affecting bilateral relations and the global economy.
Artificial intelligence is expected to feature prominently in the negotiations. Both countries view AI as an important technology for economic growth, national security and international competitiveness.
Washington has raised concerns about Chinese companies using American AI models to develop competing systems, alongside questions about safety standards and transparency. Beijing, meanwhile, has expressed concerns that U.S. technology restrictions could limit China's technological development.
The summit also comes amid continuing trade tensions between the two economies. Although both countries have moved away from the most severe tariff measures introduced during their earlier trade disputes, disagreements over market access, industrial policy and technology remain unresolved.
Critical minerals represent another important negotiating issue. China's dominant position in processing materials essential for semiconductors, electric vehicles and advanced defence systems gives Beijing considerable influence over global technology supply chains.
