AI boom collides with the climate challenge

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming industries worldwide, but its growth is creating a new challenge for global climate efforts: the technology could become both part of the environmental problem and part of the solution. The issue is taking centre stage during New York Climate Week, where government officials, business leaders and climate experts are gathering alongside the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the growing pressures facing the planet.

At the heart of the debate is the rapid expansion of AI and the data centres required to power it. These facilities require significant amounts of electricity and water, meaning continued AI growth could increase pressure on energy systems and natural resources.

At the same time, artificial intelligence could play an important role in developing climate solutions, creating a difficult balance between technological advancement and environmental sustainability.

The discussions come as the world faces additional pressures from higher fossil fuel prices linked to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, alongside increasingly destructive climate-related disasters across parts of Asia.

Concerns over the planet’s environmental condition were reinforced by a new report from the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab at Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. According to the report, seven of the nine scientifically identified planetary boundaries considered necessary for maintaining a healthy and stable Earth have now been breached.
