Apple has entered a new era with John Ternus officially taking over as chief executive officer on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook after 15 years at the helm. The leadership change comes at a critical moment for the technology giant, as it seeks to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence while preparing a major new wave of products.

Ternus, 51, is a veteran Apple hardware executive who joined the company in 2001 and rose to become senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. He has played a major role in the development of products across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. His engineering background gives him deep knowledge of Apple's product operations, but his new position will require him to navigate areas including finance, regulation, supply chains and global business relationships.

His first major test comes almost immediately. Apple is preparing its September product cycle, with the company expected to unveil significant new hardware, including a long-rumored foldable iPhone. The launches will provide an early indication of how Ternus intends to shape Apple's product strategy.

Artificial intelligence, however, may prove to be his defining challenge. Apple has struggled to match the pace set by competitors in generative AI, while its Apple Intelligence initiatives have faced delays and criticism. The company is now preparing an expanded AI-powered Siri, alongside efforts to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into future products and internal development processes.

Meanwhile, Tim Cook has not disappeared from the company. He has moved into the role of executive chairman and is expected to remain involved in areas including Apple's relationships with governments and policymakers. Under Cook, Apple's annual revenue grew from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, while its market capitalization expanded dramatically.

Ternus therefore inherits an exceptionally successful company, but one facing growing pressure in AI, services, talent retention and innovation. His ability to combine Apple's hardware strengths with a credible AI strategy will determine whether the company can maintain its momentum in its next chapter.
