New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art glowed with history, glamour, and tailored brilliance on Monday night, as the 2025 Met Gala rolled out its iconic carpet — this time in striking blue — for fashion’s most extravagant evening. The theme, “Tailored for You,” paid homage to the rich legacy of Black style and dandyism, drawing inspiration from the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
Despite a drizzle over Manhattan, the rain couldn’t dampen spirits as celebrities, designers, and cultural icons brought the theme to life with powerful tributes and bold reimaginings. This year’s dress code, a first for its menswear focus, prompted stunning reinterpretations of tailoring across the gender spectrum — from the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary couture.
Doja Cat strutted in an ’80s-inspired Marc Jacobs blazer with shoulder pads to rival skyscrapers. Zendaya stunned in a three-piece Louis Vuitton ensemble, while Janelle Monáe cleverly layered a printed jacket over an actual suit, topped with a bowler hat and spinning clock monocle — a nod to surrealist swagger. Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong’o glowed in aquamarine Chanel, complete with a flowing cape and structured hat.
The men matched stride for stride. Bad Bunny brought Caribbean flair in a laid-back brown suit and Puerto Rican pava hat, Regé-Jean Page went head-to-toe crimson, and Lewis Hamilton honored the late André Leon Talley with patent leather shoes and co-chair gravitas.
Tributes ran deep throughout the night. Diana Ross, returning to the gala after over two decades, dazzled in a gown with an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren. Gigi Hadid honored pioneering designer Zelda Wynn Valdes, while Ayo Edebiri’s Ferragamo look drew from the quiet sophistication of the dandy men in her own life.
In blending sharp tailoring with storytelling, the 2025 Met Gala proved not just a fashion spectacle, but a powerful celebration of Black heritage, personal identity, and cultural influence — stitched with pride and tailored to inspire.
