Microsoft has announced a major $6.2 billion agreement with AI hyperscaler Nscale and industrial investment company Aker to secure computing power from a large-scale AI infrastructure project in Northern Norway. The project will be powered entirely by renewable energy and is designed to support Europe’s rapidly growing demand for scalable and sustainable AI computing.
The five-year agreement forms part of Microsoft’s broader effort to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure while addressing sustainability concerns. Since launching ambitious climate goals in 2020, such as becoming carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste by 2030, the company has struggled to reduce its overall footprint due to the surge in energy-intensive data centers. The new Norway project aims to mitigate this challenge by tapping into the region’s abundant hydropower, cool climate, and existing industrial infrastructure.
The deal builds on a joint venture established in July 2025 between Nscale and Aker, known as “Stargate Norway.” That initiative targets the deployment of 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by 2026, with renewable energy as its backbone. The facility is expected to provide secure, scalable, and energy-efficient infrastructure for AI workloads across Europe, positioning Norway as a hub for sovereign AI capacity.

Microsoft has also been investing in carbon removal solutions and implementing stricter requirements for its supply chain, including mandating the use of 100% carbon-free electricity for key suppliers. The company has created a dedicated decarbonization team to address emissions from its cloud and AI operations.
The Norway project will roll out in phases beginning in 2026 and represents both a strategic digital investment and a step toward aligning AI growth with sustainability goals. With this deal, Norway is poised to play a pivotal role in Europe’s future AI and cloud infrastructure landscape.
