Working for the weekend, a concept that many people can identify with. However, living for Saturday and Sunday alone might not be the most fulfilling way to live. Experts in psychology claim that people miss out on much of their lives when they only think about the weekend.

The majority of our time is spent during the workweek, according to Dr. James Pawelski of the University of Pennsylvania's Positive Psychology Center, we are effectively wishing away five-sevenths of our lives if we are always looking forward to the weekend. He asserts that the secret is to fill weekdays with engaging and purposeful activities.

Try planning something that energizes or thrills you after a hard day rather than just crashing on the couch. Relationships are also strengthened by shared activities. Deep connections don't have to wait for the weekend. Small goals, such as learning something new about a coworker every day or planning an enjoyable midweek activity, are just as (if not more) affective.

Participating in a variety of activities also aids in the development of identities outside of the workplace, according to Dr. Emiliana Simon-Thomas of UC Berkeley. These additional roles—friend, book club member, teammate—remind us of our worth in other spheres of life when we experience setbacks in our careers.

What happens if you don't enjoy your work? UC Riverside's Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky advises rephrasing your work. If a task advances your larger objectives or benefits others in some manner, even seemingly insignificant chores can take on greater significance. Well-being can also be increased by fostering relationships at work and discovering delight in ordinary activities, such as taking a walk outside or having a conversation with coworkers.

Ultimately, happiness isn’t about escaping the week. It’s about bringing joy, purpose, and connection into every day — not just saving it for Saturday.
