Super El Nino and the Weather Disasters ahead

The return of El Niño is raising concerns among scientists as the world faces increasingly frequent and severe weather disasters. From wildfires across Europe to devastating floods in India and New York City, extreme weather events are becoming more difficult to predict and manage. The concern is heightened by the possibility that this could be one of the strongest El Niño events in recent history, occurring in a world already about 1.4°C warmer due to human-caused climate change.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon driven by changes in ocean temperatures across the equatorial Pacific. It represents the warm phase of a cycle, while La Niña is the cooler phase. Scientists officially identify El Niño when sea surface temperatures in the Pacific's Niño 3.4 region rise at least 0.5°C above the long-term average.
What makes the current event particularly concerning is not only the unusually high sea surface temperatures but also the significant warming occurring beneath the ocean's surface. These deeper waters can influence the strength and persistence of the phenomenon, potentially producing widespread effects on global weather patterns.
History demonstrates the potential economic consequences. The powerful El Niño that ended in 1998 was associated with approximately $5.7 trillion in economic damage, with impacts continuing for years after the event itself had ended. The 2015–2016 El Niño also generated losses estimated in the trillions.
